Visioneering Rep  Experience

Research, Observational, Empathy

Without dedicated researchers, this team needed to be trained in observational and empathy work. My role was of educator, creative lead, and facilitator for the entire research portion of the project. In the field of research, particularly in areas like customer understanding and empathy, the process involves various methodologies such as interviews, observational research, and empathetic research.

Interview Process:

  • Reparation: Before conducting interviews, it is crucial to prepare a question script as a guide to ensure consistency and structure.

  • Execution: During interviews, researchers actively listen, observe body language, tone of voice, and mannerisms of participants. They ask open-ended questions to delve deeper into participants' needs, goals, pain points, and emotions.

  • Analysis: After conducting interviews, researchers analyze and synthesize the data collected by reviewing notes, recordings, or transcripts to identify patterns and insights.

Observational Research Process:

  • Observation: This involves observing and recording the behavioral patterns of individuals in their natural environments without direct questioning or communication.

  • Advantages: Observation allowed researchers to move away from assumptions and see what customers actually do, providing insights that may not be captured through traditional methods.

  • Disadvantages: One challenge of observation is the temptation to assume the feelings and thoughts of subjects without direct confirmation.

Empathetic Research Process:

  • Definition: Empathetic research involves understanding users' experiences, feelings, motivations, and challenges by stepping into their shoes and seeing the world from their perspective.

  • Execution: Empathy interviews require asking questions that trigger emotional responses and encourage participants to share their experiences in-depth.

  • Importance: Empathy interviews are essential for design thinking as they help designers innovate and create products or services that truly meet users' needs.

By combining these methodologies in research processes, we gained a deeper understanding of our customers' behaviors, emotions, and needs, leading to more informed decision-making and the development of products or services that resonate with users on a profound level.
